Beer Type: Schwarzbier (Black Lager)
Serving Temp: 45 degrees
Debut: Winter 2004
Ugly Pug is an interesting curiosity. Schwarzbiers aren’t a particularly common style, but when done right (as in this case), the results can be quite wonderful. Do you like dark beer but don’t like getting weighed down by the heavy, thickness of a stout or porter? Ugly Pug is for you. It has many of the flavors and characteristics of much more substantial fare but doesn’t give you that fatboy feeling afterward and is a bit crisper and thinner on the tongue. A great beer of which you can sit back and enjoy several at once, Ugly Pug is a Texas classic and is about as versatile as a dark beer can be.
Appearance: Deep brownish black with a pilllowy, semi-persistent off-white head.
Aroma: Roast is quite apparent with thin coffee and dark chocolate aromas. Slight caramel whiffs, but very little sweetness in the nose.
Taste: Sweet malts up front with a light coffee bitterness that carries nicely through the middle. Smooth with a slight hop hint on the finish. Clean finish with little residual bitterness.
Mouthfeel: Medium-light body despite dark color. Typical to style, it's fairly thin and leaves little lingering flavors.
Drinkability: Highly drinkable. Schwarzbier style lends itself to easy-drinking and smooth finishes.
